Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are specialized hardware and software systems designed to monitor and control industrial processes, ranging from manufacturing and power generation to water treatment and distribution. Unlike traditional IT systems, ICS are engineered to interface directly with sensors, actuators, and other devices that affect changes in physical processes. Because they manage critical infrastructure, these systems are of paramount importance for safety and efficiency. They include a variety of control systems, such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Distributed Control Systems (DCS), and others. However, the increasing interconnectedness of ICS with internet-enabled technologies has raised significant security concerns, as they become more vulnerable to cyber attacks that could lead to severe disruptions or even catastrophic events. Therefore, the cybersecurity of ICS is a growing area of focus both for industry and government.
